Heritage Visits The Neighbors

by Kay Tornborg

Recently an invitation came from Jennifer Charnofsky, on the Board of Directors of the West Adams Heritage Association, to send a representative to a potluck dinner at which they would discuss their organization’s history, successes and current challenges. This seemed like an excellent opportunity to learn from other organizations so I accepted the invitation and packed up my Zankou chicken for the spread.

Various illnesses felled a few other participants so two representatives, one from Old Towne Orange and yours truly, turned out to be the featured speakers. Following the presentations there was lively Q&A: How do you interact with the business community? How do you enlist members? How do you ensure continuity of administration in a volunteer organization where officers may have widely varying administrative skills? What role does the Council office play? There were many questions about security on Hollywood’s streets, the success of Hollywood-Highland, how Hollywood deals with parking challenges and the role of the newly formed Neighborhood Councils and the BID (Business Improvement District). These questions were ably answered by Hollywood Heritage member Joel Fisher, who is BID Treasurer and President of the Hollywood United Neighborhood Council. Old Orange reported repeated successes with house tours, an area into which Hollywood Heritage is about to venture.

Altogether, the organizations enjoyed more similarities than differences. The evening was very fruitful and will, hopefully, pave the way for future cooperation with our neighbors to the south. They have a WONDERFUL neighborhood (Van Buren Place and environs) that Hollywood Heritage members will enjoy exploring during house tours or just driving through. Thanks to Jennifer Charnovsky for opening her gorgeous 1910 Craftsman house for this delightful and informative occasion.
