Happy 125th Birthday, Hollywood

Hollywood Heritage was part of the celebration of Hollywood's 125th birthday on Feb. 1, 2012. This day marks the day in 1886 that Harvey Wilcox registered his acreage as "Hollywood" a name his wife Daida, suggested - based on the name of an Illinois estate belonging a traveling companion she had met on a trip West. The Cahueng Na indians called it "The Valley of the Smoke" and the Spanish called it Nopalera. As Hollywood, the Wilcox property, primarily through its association with the entertainment industry, is now internationally reknowned.

At right is seen (partially) Councilman Tom LaBonge, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board Marty Shelton, Councilman Eric Garcetti and entertainer Jimmy Kimmel. The celebration was held at Hollywood and Highland and featured "flash mob" dancers and an ornate birthday cake by "Ace of Cakes" chef, Duff Goldman.

OLLYWOOD HERITAGE CONGRATULATES OSCAR AND

NYLA ARSLANIAN

NylaOscarHollywood Heritage congratulates Oscar and Nyla Arslanian on their recent Hollywood Star Award from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The award was presented at the organization’s November Entertainment Industry Luncheon. The Arslanians, publishers of Discover Hollywood magazine have long touted Hollywood as a tourism destination and promoted its cultural heritage resources since 1986. Discover Magazine has for the last 25 years promoted local retailers and entertainment venues including our own Hollywood Heritage Museum. Discover Hollywood is published quarterly and has a circulation of 75,000 copies. About 40,000 are distributed through hotels, visitor centers, restaurants and Southern California tourist attractions and 35,000 are mailed to nearby homes. The Arslanians have long been allies in preservation efforts and have contributed their time to Hollywood Heritage by serving as board members. Thanks, Oscar and Nyla, for your continued promotion of Hollywood and the entertainment industry. Best wishes for your continued success.
